DARK AND HAUNTED ATHENS
available from July 2025 every Saturday and Sunday (booking must be made on request)
This is a private tour (approx. 5-6 hours) for small parties limited to 2-6 participants. Depending on the weather we will follow one of two alternative programs, either to the south or the north suburbs of Athens.
Route A: In a clear day, after our meeting at around 5 pm, we will drive to the area of Cape Sounio to visit an old abandoned settlement, walk among the ruined 19th-20th cent. buildings and visit the reputedly haunted chapel. We will then drive through the national park and among the remains of various entrances to old mines where in ancient times thousands of slaves are said to have lost their lives, while tragic accidents have continued to claim miners' lives until more modern years. We will visit an abandoned building where miners used to gather before entering the 'underworld' and the bravest of us will follow their steps and enter one of the best preserved tunnels honeycombing the whole area, and investigate, looking for echoes from past tragedies. After a short stop for light lunch, we will then proceed to the earliest known ancient Greek theater, on the slopes of a hill where several ancient graves have been dug up, in an area where goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone, queen of the Underworld, were once celebrated.
Route B (optional): In case of rainy weather, we may have to follow the alternative program and drive to one of the most beautiful areas of northern Athens to visit other locations equally mysterious and interesting... Starting from a 19th century 'cursed' mansion where the imprint of an infamous Duchess may still literally be seen among the stones. Then follow the dirt road up the mountain to the entrance of a legendary mysterious cave that over the last 50 years has gained the reputation of the most 'paranormal' area in Athens. And, after a short break for light lunch, we will finally visit an old abandoned villa on the top of an Attic hill, where in July 1944 during the occupation by the Nazis several atrocities have been committed, ending with the execution of 200 civilians that are said to still haunt the area.
